Unsung Heroes: The Story of the 6888
In this episode of "Time Tellers," hosts Renee and Dan delve into the remarkable yet often overlooked story of the 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-female unit that served with distinction during World War II. As the United States faced a colossal backlog of mail threatening soldier morale overseas, these women rose to the challenge, defying racial and gender prejudices.
Led by the indomitable Charity Adams Early, the 855-strong battalion worked tirelessly under grueling conditions, clearing warehouses in Birmingham, England, and later Roanne, France. Despite facing immense discrimination, they triumphed, processing millions of pieces of mail with efficiency and dedication, all while supporting one another in a close-knit community.
Their motto, "No mail, low morale," encapsulated the critical nature of their mission, ensuring that troops stayed connected with their loved ones back home. Join us as we explore the enduring legacy of these unsung heroes and reflect on their contributions, which were finally recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal decades after their pivotal wartime efforts.
